Why Children's Liturgy

The church is very aware that during Mass the Readings, Homily and ceremony are more suitable for adults. Because of this, the Church recommends that children should have their own Liturgy of the Word adapted to their own age and needs.

LITTLE CHURCH has been our response to that recommendation at Our Lady of the Angels and has proved to be very popular with both parents and children.

In LITTLE CHURCH the children are introduced to the readings in a way that they can understand in a prayerful, reflective atmosphere. This can be through singing, acting out the gospel, drawing and composing prayers.

For Parents' attention:

We would like to ask for your cooperation in helping us to ensure that the children benefit fully from their Little Chruch experience by observing the following:

  • Little Church is for children aged 3 - 7. Once children start to prepare for their First Holy Communion (usually when they are in Year 3), they should remain in the main body of the church. We have a special service for them at the end of July to pray for them and wish them well on the next step of their spiritual journey.

  • If your children are attending Little Church, can you ensure that they are there at the beginning of mass, so that they can process out together behind the Little Church banner. Late arrivals are disruptive to the liturgy and the late children often feel self-conscious and embarrassed coming in alone. Once the children have processed into the room, we will not be admitting latecomers. It would also be very helpful if you could keep any toys, sweets and mobile phones with you as this is also a source of disruption and distraction during the liturgy.

  • Parents of children must be in the church and not in the car park. We are responsible for children whose parents are in the main body of the church and, on no account, will we return children to parents in the car park.

  • To ensure that your child fully benefits from the liturgy, please inform the group leaders of any special needs that your child may have, i.e. sensitive to loud noises, need to have space around them or if they have behavioural needs that may need attention, we can ensure that they will be catered for. Please be aware that we have five groups on the rota so each week the liturgists are different.
